Song Quality: How good the album is based on songs alone. Intended to balance the overall score and admit an album may be better (or in some cases, worse) than I give it credit for, though sometimes it will match up with the overall. This number affects how high an album can rise within its enjoyment category. Enjoyment: How enjoyable the album is to listen to as a full album; longevity also plays a role in this as some albums burn out quickly while others have great staying power. This also affects which category an album is placed in, and ultimately how high up the handbook it is possible for an album to go. Categories: ★★★★★: Best in show; pinnacle. ★★★★1/2: Very nearly perfect. ★★★★: Excellent; top of the pile. ★★★1/2: Very good; minor flaws. ★★★: Good; recommended for fans. ★★1/2: Average; fails to meet expectations. ★★: Unexceptional; few highlights. ★1/2: Weak; truly bland. ★: Seriously flawed; very poor work. 1/2: Terrible; a true embarrassment. 	Geek Down: Nodima's Hip-Hop Index Originally intended as a simplified guidebook to Run That Shit: Nodima's Hip-Hop Handbook (hence Index), this list aims to rank artists based on their discographies. Generally, if an artist appears on more than 75% of the tracks on an album I'll be considering it part of their discography. But there are a couple of rules: 1. Must have graded at least 3 releases in Run That Shit: Nodima's Hip-Hop Handbook (usually after three albums you have a good idea of where somebody's going). 2. Must be an official release (so artists like Lil' Wayne and other mixtape artists aren't bloated with unofficial material they didn't control). Each artist is ranked by the average of their release's overall scores, with a .5 bonus for 5+ releases graded and an additional bonus for 10+ releases graded. This is basically because it's respectable if an artist can release that much stuff and make it all interesting, and rewards the artist's longevity/productivity a little bit. 	All in Together Now: Hip-Hop by the Year A simple ranking of years based on releases graded in the handbook, along with a subtle argument: it's not so much that hip-hop is any worse twenty-five years after its inception, but rather there is an abundance of hip-hop at varying degrees of quality that this generation of listeners is all to eager to explore the depths of, for better or worse. Because of this, the latter years are inarguably handicapped, but I didn't realize that until I'd already tallied up all the stuff for most years. Hopefully this will still be another interesting companion to Run That Shit: Nodima's Hip-Hop Handbook, and in time more accurately represent the ranking of years. But I may have to pull off something like diction's "by the years" project to make it happen. :( This also does a good job of exposing the inherent bias of the handbook: out of 479 [Sept. 20 2009] items, 194 [Sept. 20 2009] of them are from 2008-2009. Luckily most of that is the dead weight at the bottom of the list, but I think it's still worth pointing out that the Handbook has a long ways to go before it's anywhere near complete.
