Bubblegum music is important because it's a reminder that rock/pop isn't to be taken too seriously. It can be great, it can be artful, it can even be edifying—all words I'd use to describe several songs on this bouncing ball of an LP—but so can a nice lemon layer cake. I see rock music as a big tray of desserts, a bunch of cupcakes, cookies, ice cream sundaes, and danishes. The music experience has a lot of parallels to the eating experience, I think. Even some of the most serious rock music is ultra-silly when you take a step back from it... even sillier sometimes than intentionally goofy stuff like this.
The first 1910 Fruitgum Co. album is a likable bag of marshmallows. There's not a sugar-free moment here, with a few fine bits of feather-light psych, like the almost Curt Boettcher-worthy "Magic Windmill". Also, in the context the time, it's always funny to notice how bubblegum bands drew from and referred to nursery rhymes in the same way that "important" bands like the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds drew from and referred to old blues songs. What Muddy Waters was to the British blues rockers, Mother Goose was to the bubblegum acts. |

Wonderful bubblegum pop! While all of the hits were penned by outside composers, the songs written by the band members are also marvelous. Pop Goes the Weasel is a rewrite of the nursery rhyme and good fun. Keep Your Thoughts on the Bright Side is a beautiful daughter of Penny Lane. Magic Windmill, written by band founder Frank Jeckell, is a lovely aching bit of psychedelia. The Year 2001 is a fun little ditty. Soul Struttin' was co-written by Tony Orlando and is a run-of-the-mill soul number. Simon Says and May I Take a Giant Step are classic bubblegum hits. The rest is also great. Highly recommended! |

Prima Bubblegum-Pop. Schön seicht und melodiös. Eine grandiose Musik für einen sonnigen Sonntagmorgen. "Simple Simon" hat seine Ohrwurmqualitäten ja zu genüge bewiesen. |

This was never meant to be taken seriously. At least I hope not. This was harmless pop fluff that was appropriate and fun for the time era. |
