Okay, so it does sound kind of dated, especially to someone like me that was born the year it was released. But still, I was expecting this to be a little more tame. Sure, I expected it to be full of blatant sexual messages, but they cover the whole fucking map here...anal, rimjobs, facials, this is seriously VULGAR music that even the likes of Kool Keith, Necro (The Sexorcist) and the Elektrik Pimps haven't really topped twenty years down the line. And the music too, whilst being a little bit dated with that paced style of rapping that a lot of 80s rappers used, is still pretty hard. 'Me So Horny' and 'Put Her in the Buck' start the album of banging, very catchy and danceable, great high energy music. It gets a bit more diverse from there as the crew genre hop a bit, but they're very playful about it.
That's what it's intended to be too. I can't think of another album that's more centered around having fun than this one, and 2 Live Crew's favourite way to have fun is doing their ABCs - anal, blowjobs and cunnilingus. Seriously, if you're a feminist in any way, shape or form avoid this album. However, if you love obscene music that's also pretty damn good on it's own merits ('The Fuck Shop' and 'My Seven Bizzos' sample Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix respectively, thought that was rather cool) then this is a fun album. Nothing essential, but worth a good spin every now and then for sure. |

Guarrete, excesivo, barriobajero. Pues riamos. No queda más. |

The infamous 2 Live Crew album that resulted in an obscenity charge and elevated them to legends in some sense. Especially when they won the court case eventually, a real hip-hop victory. Of course as should be no surprise the record itself is a ridiculously sexed up and really pretty mindless. The production is pretty fine though which is it's saving grace and selling point for me. I'm not sure if Luke himself is responsible for the music or what but there you have it. One thing that caught my ear amidst the sex, sex, and sex, was some anger at being minimized by New Yorkers, looked down upon and all that. No world is safe from discrimination it seems, not even hip-hop.

The hype surrounding this record at the time could never live up to actual quality of the album. I like many snot nosed kids at the time, HAD to have this record. An album that was actually banned from stores or you had to purchase "over the counter", a kid had to see what it was all about.
The album itself wasnt that bad, and yeah it has the words FUCK and Pussy and DICK and Bitch just about every 2nd or 3rd word through out the album, but the album itself is fun. And thats what they intended this album to be, but with vulgarity going fullforce.
A good cop overall, but anyone can get this now and it doesnt hold the same "must have - collecters item" that it had back in 89-90. |

"As Nasty As They Wanna Be" created one giant heap of controversy in the music world. "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" was the first and only album to ever be banned from the U.S.A., and people were literally arrested for sale of this album! Then there was the fact that the record company behind this (Skywalker Records) was sued by George Lucas for copyright issues. Long story short, all this controversy ended up making "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" 2 Live Crew's most successful album by a longshot.
The question is though, does the music live up to the controversy? The answer is for the most part "yes".
"As Nasty As They Wanna Be" is mostly really good stuff. The production is absolutely killer; the beats are great, the sampling is genius, and the actual rap skills of 2 Live Crew are actually pretty good.
The only thing thats hard to like about "As Nasty As They Wanna Be", is usually the lyrics. While the music is generally pretty "hooky" and memorable, many of the lyrics are just straight-up gross. And needless to say, ALL of the lyrics are offensive. I truly would say these are some of the most offensive lyrics I have ever heard, and it that regard I guess 2 Live Crew doesn't disappoint.
Anyway, if you can handle the lyrics, the music you will find here is actually surprisingly solid. And at the very least, "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" was a very memorable culture shock.

This album reminds me of a skit on Ice-T's O.G. Original Gangsta. On the skit, someone (who actually eludes me for now). The skit basically goes:
"Yo, Ice where's the sex rhymes, man."
"I wasn't really gonna drop any this time, man. I wasn't feelin' it."
"WHAT? C'mon Ice! Titties titties titties, sex sex sex. That's what it's all about."
I think you get what I'm trying to say, here. When this album dropped in '89, there was this backlash because of the sexual content of this album. In fact, it was so controversial, it's one of the few albums I know of that actually got banned in the U.S.A. (and inspired the name of their next effort). And I have to admit, I can understand why they wanted to ban it in the ultra-conservative time.... though I'm totally against any banning of any album.
Lyrics... psh, you know it already. These are average-at-best sex rhymes that involve such statements as, "While you're down there, you can suck my asshole too". This really tested me... it's an entire album of this! Okay, don't get me wrong, the occasional sex rhyme is perfectly fine for me. But over eleven tracks, it tends to wear thin after a while. Wow... wowwity wow wow. I know, I know: it's supposed to be fun! No, I just don't get it from time to time. In other words, don't listen to this if you're a lyric-digger.This is dirty, dirty sex rap.
The beats, on the other hand... well, I have to admit, these are some decent beats. It's definitely got a late-80s feel to it. For example, Sex Shop samples 80s rock such as Guns 'n Roses and the sort (never a good thing). Other than that, there isn't any truly bad beat. Me So Horny samples Full Metal Jacket... awwww, that's such a good sample! These beats really saved my rating here. When you hear these bassy stuffs, you're gonna feel like you're walking on South Beach in the 80s with like, I don't know... a pina colada or margarita or something. I'll give them credit for putting such a nice image in my mind. Hey, look at all that big hair! Some trends just had to die. Ah, oh well.
Things I liked? If You Believe in Having Sex actually cracked me up. It's a really funny track, and the white-guy imitation is... a classic. Other than that, Me So Horny, if only for the sample. Most other tracks range from mediocre to disposable... no, that wasn't a GZA reference. Don't you dare think it.
Overall... gosh, read the damn review. Get this if you dig the sex rhymes or value beats highly. Bitches, let's fuck. Now I gots ta be gone... don't have any kids. |

Now it does. Now everything is right in the universe according to 2 Live. Once we begin to recognize the $%@ or the beep as more obscene than an impassioned syllable, we begin to shrug off our ignoble Christian cloaks and get livin' fah reals. |
