Well, this remix album, rated just beneath average, has been worked out fine, nevertheless the songs overall remain, like their original companions, the same. Those poor suckers of electronica producers, who couldn't be creative as much and free as other producers like soulwax - just to name the most influential one. The album sounds a bit too romantic and cuts the border of cliché, too limited is the outwork. As though remixes in general give songs the opportunity to recreate the song structure in order to develop another atmosphere, e.g. the depressing mood of the original song is turned inside out to a dance floor song. That potential is what enables remixes to show a different side of an original song. That's the creative thrill of recreation. It seems like a perfect circle is cultivating a staying-at-home-listening-action-on-its-own by changing very minimal. Personally i can't see a purpose in the structure: no dance, no grief but an unsolved problem of how to cope with rocksongs which are supposed to be turned into more electronical moods. I bet, they weren't able to let the songs work out the electronical progression on their own. Too afraid, they would loose track completly. To closeby a perfect circle is. |

One of the few thoroughly enjoyable remix-albums - but being a remix album doesn't score you points. |

A collection of APC remixes taken from their first two albums 'Mer de Noms' and 'Thirteenth Step'.
I can't believe this has a rating of under 3 to be honest. I think some of the remixes are better than the originals (eg. 'Blue' and 'Weak and Powerless' stand out) and considering that the CD is packaged with the DVD (which features all of APC's videos plus some unreleased stuff), it's great value for money. |

A Perfect Circle is a great band. Their remixes are not. Avoid this. |

After a quick browse I was left slightly wanting, and bearing in mind how special the live side of APC is, I would have expected more than one tracks worth of live footage (which isn't much good anyway because the recording is so dark). What the DVD does well is that it draws together the eight music videos APC have amassed, as well as the three alternate videos for Blue, which were runners up in the video competition the band ran some time ago.
Also included are the three Bikini Bandit videos (a film which Maynard was in), as well as some useless and very low resolution footage of the band pissing about behind the scenes which looks as if it were shot for an age old mobile phone!
The bonus audio CD ties things up nicely with several alternate mixes / remixes of popular A Perfect Circle tracks, and does the job of adding content to this otherwise lack lustre release. The music video to Imagine, which I’m not sure would have been allowed to air in current 'PG 13' form, is a very moving and bleak look at the word and is various problems, and was the best thing to come out of this slightly disappointing 'fans only' set. |
