Strictly Leakage is honestly a crazy record in Atmosphere's discography. My biggest problem with the group was always a matter of aesthetics - no matter how well I could see where Slug and A.N.T. were coming from it was hard for me to actually connect with or enjoy the music. And it's not because the music is depressing white boy shit, but because, well I don't really know. It just gets stale quick and I can't personally get into Atmosphere. But for the past three years or so I've really loved Slug's guest appearances and decided that he generally tears it up on the microphone. In fact, he's probably one of the ten or twenty best lyricists currently doing his or her thing. But his music, man, it's just never very enjoyable.
So, enter Strictly Leakage. It's still some A.N.T. stylings but he seems very consciously to be trying to bring us back to 1992 or so, and the results are a bunch of light-hearted beats that fans of his later work may have expected, but I certainly never imagine his beats with as much life and verve as "The Things That Hate Us" or "YGM". And Slug responds in kind, becoming more of a battle rapper than a self-serious semi-poet. Considering the timing of the record - as a precursor to the ultra-serious art project When Life Gives You Lemons..., I can see why Daley felt the need to kick this out. By the end of this decade Atmosphere were pretty firmly entrenched in the too-serious, too-emo category of white boy hip-hop. Slug, always one to be concerned with credibility ("Little Math You") uses this free album as a platform to prove he knows what this hip-hop shit is about at its essence, and he honestly just mercs it. Slug as a battle rapper is ridiculously entertaining, and his barbecue swagger raps ("Jewelry") aren't much worse off either. He does still get conscious with stuff like the aforementioned song about suburban Matthew and "YGM", but as the album builds it becomes clear the main focus is punchlines and battle raps.
Honestly, what's great about this album is that it shows a guy could really have it both ways if he were truly talented enough. Like, imagine El-P cutting character to do an old school '80s style record, or the Game deciding it was time to do something besides a wanna-be west coast album littered with his favorite song titles and sports teams in place of lyrics. It's an interesting proposition, and one that's made Strictly Leakage quite possibly my favorite release in the Atmosphere discography. Some people will probably find this as monotonous as their other releases (though likely - hopefully - it'd be for different reasons), and one could probably make an equally impassioned argument that Slug doesn't need to 'waste his time' on this typical rapper shit. But that's certainly not a very hip-hop way to look at things - this shit here should happen more often from artists like Atmosphere, if only to let us know it's not always no more fun and games. |

For a free, legal download, it's definitely good. However, as far as songwriting goes, it's Atmosphere's weakest offering. Still, there are quite a few standout tracks, mostly in the first half of the album. |

Okay, a couple of things here...the beats are incredible, the lyrics are smart and make excellent commentary on society throughout...its very clever...did I mention this thing is free? I'm sold, I'll be paying for my next Atmosphere album!
I get lost in a lot of these beats they are fabulous. I love the comments on the current horrid state of pop music, culture and teens...it is very anti-american and anyone that can't get into that is probably already an idiot and wouldn't appreciate this anyways...
There are a lot of highlights, i debated for a long while about giving this 5 stars, but after its all said and done, i just couldn't do it, still its a near flawless album that is LEGALLY FREE...if you are smart and like rap GET THIS. |

Not a great showing... as it only has a couple good songs, but hey, it's legally free to download. |

As if brining us another edition of the Sad Clown Bad Dub series wasn't enough, Atmosphere hits us with another release to keep us happy during the dark and cold winter days. And it's downloadable free from the Rhymesayers website too. Good enough reason for anyone to check it out. Fan or not. As always with this duo, this is a solid release. Slug brings his A-game on the mic bringing some vintage Slug lyrics, but this time around he is also having a lot of fun, Slug style of course. Ant never misses, and the beats here seem to fit the winter days rather good. No negatives for this release, especially since it's free. I actually hope their gonna sell copies of this too, because I like to have an actual copy of dope releases. Or may be as a bonus CD for their new releases "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold". |

Atmosphere gave us a christmas present last year with a free download release of Strictly Leakage to hold us over for the release of their upcoming release.
Strictly Leakage is a fun album with uplifting production and just a few dull moments. I could do without a couple of the songs, but this is very enjoyable. Especially for being a free gift from the group themselves. It's good to see them do a fun record too, rather than all the depressing music that's spread throughout their discography. |

It's a party album. A lot of the songs have that beat that no one can argue with. |

Typically decent Atmos. Could be better but better than the upcoming Lemons
Atmosphere have never made an album which isn't great in my eyes (and that's from a collection of 30+ releases and counting).
Well, I should be more specific... "Slug" is ALWAYS on point. What makes an Atmos release "awesome" over just "good" comes down to how much effort Ant puts into the beats. On Strictly Leakage there are many top notch Atmos songs but there are also some where the beats are a little "heat 'n' eat".
And why the hell not -THIS ONE'S FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Classics:
- Full Moon
- Get It To Get Her
- What They Sittin' For?
These guys shit top-quality hiphop on an hourly basis. They may not ALWAYS put out 5-star albums, but they consistantly put out 4+ star releases every few months. |

I like this album. It's not as deep as their other stuff and doesn't really have a message. Instead, it's an album that you can just sit back and relax to on a nice summer day. |
