Don't Mess With Texas is about as southern as it sounds. I can understand why this is the first review for this album, because in the end there's really not a whole lot to say about it. Keke comes from DJ Screw's Screwed Up Click and this album comes out of their most productive period, so it's predictably solid in all phases and has no notable weak points. They also do a really smart job of opening with a classic, easing the album into a small section of filler and then dropping another classic before closing the disc out with a non-chopped version of the beginning song. Actually, I think that's the one weak point of the disc. It's not often that a screwed mix truly trumps the original version, but the actual "Still Pimpin' Pens" sounds like it was performed specifically to be slowed down later. It's just really rough and can't compare to Screw's remix. "All in the Game" is an amazing song, though, and stuff like the title track, "Serious Smoke" and "It's Going Down" should give fans of Houston plenty of reasons to come back to this album again and again. |
