Nelly Furtado is really hot!
And she sings in Spanish!
And the songs kinda suck! |

Furtado either can't make up her made, or tries to stay on top of both worlds: her mainstream party-bangers she produces with Timbaland and her original, European flavor. Whatever it is, it fails: her brand new release recored in her mother language is neither interesting nor original. |

Cet album est le projet personnel de Nelly Furtado, elle y pensait depuis longtemps déjà. I think she did an amazing job on the Mi Plan album she recorded all around the latin america/north america along her spanishish friends como Julieta Venegas. Her collaborations are great, especially when it comes to Fuerte with Buika, their voices mix in such a powerful way. The trio with Julieta Venegas and Mala Rodriguez is probably the best song of the record if you like the sunshine pop-remembering a hot summertime day kind of songs. It's refreshing (Bajo Otra Luz). This album is closer to Folklore than Loose or Whoa, Nelly ! It has great taste and if you are a fan of music of great taste you won't be disapointed. The best tracks are : Mas, Suenos, Bajo Otra Luz, Fuerte and Como lluvia. |

What happened, Nelly? I thought you couldn't do wrong. After three extremely well-done albums, all of them very different, I thought you could do a perfectly awesome Spanish album.
But that's not what I get. Of course, "Manos Al Aire" and "Más", the first two singles, are delicious Nelly and stand up very well with the rest of her catalogue. They are both a return to "Whoa, Nelly!"'s basics, but without forgetting what made "Loose" so good.
But the rest of the album, it just looks like a Spanish mess that tries to be, at the same time, "Folklore" and a Spanish Shakira album. The title track and "Sueños" are completely rubbish (for Nelly's standards anyway). Next track, "Bajo Otra Luz", is a bit better, but still not as nearly as good as my expectations.
And the album never steps up, never fully becomes what a Nelly Furtado album should be. "Vacación" is filler, "Suficiente Tiempo" is good but not great, and then "Fuerte" comes, the first song since "Más" to really perk me up. But now the album is near its end and my hopes can't get up.
And they really shouldn't, as the final three tracks are as unremarkable as the entire album is. The biggest irony is how the hidden track in the end of the album, "Fantasmas", is undoubtedly the best track of the album.
"Mi Plan" can't really appeal to Nelly Furtado's fanbase, and it also can't really appeal to new fans either. It gets elements from her previous three albums, and also relies heavily on collaborations, but it ultimately is her weakest album by a long margin. It isn't carefree, quirky and blissful like "Whoa, Nelly!", it isn't intelligent, artistic and diverse as "Folklore", it isn't engaging, clever and fearless like "Loose". "Mi Plan" feels calculated, repressed, underwhelming, lifeless, weak. If this is Nelly's plan, it's a not a very well-thought one. |
