Fuck the Bible and the Quran and all books of faith or pieces of evidence or personal supernatural experiences that SAY God exists. If any real believer wants to convince me that the one and only supreme God is watchin' over us, then this piece of musical recording would be their strongest argument.
yea bitch, I'll dance to that. |

Thank you EPMD for introducing us to one of the best rappers ever grab the mic: Reggie Noble, a.k.a. Redman. He has an insane microphone charism, awesome flow and interesting lyrics, he just does it all! So is it any wonder that his debut Whut? Thee Album is nothing short of a classic? It was released in 1992 and it definitely deserves the honor to be in the Top 5 releases of the year. First, to the vocal side. Like I said before, Redman is one of the best eastern rappers ever. His style is so unique that he can't be filtered into some category: he is far from conscious or pop, he isn't gangster nor total hardcore rapper, he's just Redman. His rhymes are funny, sometimes even hilarious or retarded. Perfect comedy! How about the production? Three words probably describe it best: Erick 'Funky' Sermon! EPMD influenced beat world of Parliament samples fit so good to Redman that it's almost phenomenal. Once again no bad beats from Sermon! No flaws then? Well, some. There are few tracks which don't have the best-fitting beat and tracks which beat is awesome should be definitely longer. Shortly: good tracks should be longer and not-sp-good tracks should be removed. Abyway, Whut? Thee Album is the triumph of funky-funky-funky production and Redman's lyrical approach. This is an essential hip hop album to listen, and this goes out to you guys over there, and your wives and your dogs. No one makes music like this anymore, not even Red himself.

A landmark of East Coast funk. Judging by the singles, I never would have thought that Redman could put together so cohesive an album. Outstanding.

I obtained Muddy Waters a few months ago, listened to it, dug it, never fully immersed myself, but really liked Redman's style in general. My curiosity was piqued. So for whatever reason, "Whut? Thee Album" climbed to the top of my mental wishlist- if I could have gotten my hands on any album, I probably would have chosen this one. Then, last Monday I'm over at the neighborhood Record and Tape Exchange trading in 3 doo-doo cds for 10.50 store credit. I walk around, peruse, bemuse (always), mostly just snooze, though, as I peep the usual- an indie rock classic here, a box full of home-made ish there (found one of bnoring's there one time!). Then in the rap section, after scanning over the 5 copies of 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of... ( a good album, but I guess most rap consumers aren't fans) my eyes land on this baby. Woo! $9.something, I walk past Rich, "this is all man!", "alright, sweet!" and head out the door with a little more bass in my step than usual (and I usually have a good deal of bass in there as is). Needless to say, I took the longer route home through the neighborhoods, stickin' to the 25 mph zone, bumpin' these jams for the first time and grinning. It's more than a week later and I've gotten to know this album pretty damn intimately. I feel somewhat ... rejuvenated... by it, I would dare to say. I've been listening to plenty of music lately, same as always, but I guess sometimes you get off-track, you don't listen quite as closely. No, you don't really IMMERSE yourself in the track. Which isn't to say I hadn't done that in months, no, but I had been listening on auto-pilot somewhat. Well the fat funky beats on this cd DO get my head bopping in an involuntary manner, they do get me open. This shit is so funky and so dense, so sample-icious and so, so fun. And then of course there's Redman, the star of the show. Maybe this is the rapper whose personality is the most similar to mine... or I want to be the most similar to. He's unique, confident, clever, funny, dirty, completely unpretentious, totally unapologetic, and he's got the skills, not to impress you in a super complex way, but to make shit catchy and highly entertaining. I am so, so entertained by this album. I ACTUALLY LAUGH OUT LOUD, and multiple times. For example, "Time 4 Sum Aksion" suddenly cuts out, midsentence, to "yo yo yo CHILL G! chill, la, it's over, man. you ain't gotta say no more, it's over!" Seriously, shit tickles me. So yeah, I feel like a kid when I'm listening to this. This past Monday I'm leaving the radio station where I had just completed my final show for the semester, where I had turned all the lights off in the studio besides the computer screens to pump the Latyrx track "Latyrx" over the airwaves (wow, so unrelated), and yeah, once again I got "Whut? Thee Album" in my headphonez. I'm shouting along the whole way back, it's midnight and I'm chilly, I'm wearing a ski-vest to be more like Redman, I'm wearing a beanie similar to him (sticks up tall), i got on some bigass winter gloves to make my hands look huge, and I am fucking going off. Truthfully, one of my favorite albums. I ENJOY IT!!! |

Hmm, Redman. A popular fellow among most people. But I honestly don't get the hype. I mean dude is alright, he's got his own thing going on, I love his energy. But in the end I just find him kinda...a lot like Das EFX, lots of fun but without a whole lot of real strength (unlike say The Pharcyde). And unsurprisingly this was another rare popular east coast album in the early 90's. It gives a fair sized concession to west coast style what with the hard funk, and from what I've read it's actually Redman's own production mostly (not Erik Sermon's). But I'm sorry, this is really nothing more then a "3". I want to like it more, but I just don't.

Ah, Redman. I thank the Gods and EPMD for introducing us to the reefer-addicted New Jersey native. After effortlessly murdering Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith on their own shit, it's only right that Redman puts his excellent rap skills on his own album. In the innovative year for hip-hop that was 1992, Redman introduces his crazy styles in the form of Whut? Thee Album.
To put it frankly, nobody raps like Redman. Nobody. On the surface, Redman comes of as a hardcore motherfucker. He's more than happy to let you know that he's packin' a gat. But unlike most gat packin' MCs, Redman ain't aimin' his steel at your punk ass. Redman ain't what I would call a gangsta; let's just say he takes advantage of his Second Amendment rights. Despite one of his lines in EPMD's "Hardcore", Redman's main agenda isn't "murderin' motherfucks like Manson". He'd rather teach you how to roll a blunt so you and him could get lifted. Lyrically, there's not much else to his style besides minor gun talk, sticky-icky, and bragging. But, Redman does all of these thing while putting good doses of comedy into his raps. Red's a really funny dude. The things he says and does throughout the album are hilariously retarded. Not to mention he has good comic timing. One of the humorous highlights is in "Blow Your Mind" when he tries to go off in Korean, but gives up quickly after stumbling through a few words. And even if you don't share Redman's "blunted" sense of humor, you gotta respect his excellent rap technique. He'd finesse his style in later albums, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with his rapping here. There have been a few years over the years that have been influenced by Redman (Eminem being one) and they're good in their own right, but they're nothing like Redman. The Philly Bluntman is in a class of his own. With the excellent rapping and good fusion of comedy, Redman is just a joy to listen to. He's one of the most entertaining rappers ever.
Whut? Thee Album is produced by Redman's producer alter ego Reggie Noble and Erick Sermon of EPMD fame, with Pete Rock producing "How to Roll a Blunt". The beats primarily utilize the tried-and-true "safe route" formula of James Brown and George Clinton samples, except with some Zapp samples also thrown in. There are lots of other samples too though. Erick Sermon and Reggie Noble give Whut? Thee Album a cohesive sound of hardcore funkiness that is complemented by hardcore drums. Every beat here is excellently funky.
Any problems? Nada. There are a few skits that you'll probably skip, but they don't take away from the album's excellence.
I recommend this album to East Coast rap fans, Redman fans (duh), The Slim Shady LP fans, Chino XL fans, EPMD fans, Cypress Hill fans, and Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg fans.
Whut? Thee Album is one of my all-time favorite albums from one of my all-time favorite rappers. Thankfully, this was only the beginning for this spliffed psycho.
