Superb Clientele [Chambermusik 2009]
1|Intro|1:42 3 - 3.75 2|The Campaign|2:57 3.5 - 4 3|Coogi (Skit)|0:49 2.5 - 3 4|Can't Outrap Me|3:37 3 - 3.5 5|Buck After Buck (feat. Young City)|2:41 1.5 - 2 Young City sucks. 6|Ashes 2 Ashes Dust 2 Dust (feat. Stack Bundles)|2:41 3 - 3.25 7|D.O.A.|1:42 (Produced by No I.D.) 3.25 - 4 8|I Am So Ill|3:03 2 - 2.75 9|Perb Blakks Out (Skit)|1:25 1 - 1.5 Ghostface parody? Not really sure. 10|Meetin' With Death|2:30 (Produced by RZA) 3.5 - 4 11|Letter to Chip Banks|3:23 3.5 - 4 If this beat were in Kno's hands, I could see a lot of potential in it. 12|The Symphony (feat. Un Pacino and Perry)|2:55 (Produced by the Alcemist) 3.25 - 4 Pachino reminds me of Sean Price. 13|Fresh Out da Slammer (feat. Ammo, Chinx Drugz and Jitta)|4:12 3 - 3.25 14|I Feel It Too|3:02 4 This beat sounds a lot like one from Betrayl's album this year. On more of a Prodigy/Gigan style here. 15|Dear Mommy|2:33 2.25 - 3 16|Get You Fresh|3:40 2 - 2.25 Cheap remake/rewrite of "Best I Ever Had". 17|When It Rains It Pours (feat. Shorty Real)|3:52 3.25 - 4 DJ Drama impersonator going on throughout the track for some reason. 18|You Police You Jake (feat. Hardcore)|2:46 2 - 2.5 Random Swizz Beatz party track about not snitching - doesn't work, obviously. 19|Pop Ya Collars, Pt. 2 (feat. Un Pacino)|2:50 (Produced by the Alchemist) 3 "I ain't write every rhyme but his flow is mine" "Guess he ain't Nas, I'm Nature I gotta hold his hand" 20|Learn the Game (feat. Raekwon)|3:07 3 21|The One (feat. Convict)|3:42 3 - 3.25
Overall: 62.5 - 64 3.01/5 60 - 61%: Good; serious flaws; BE WARNED
Dude sure raps about E pills a lot. Sometime Superb still reminds me of Ghostface, but he actually sounds more like Joe Budden most of the time on this one. A lot of gun talk aimed at no one in particular with somewhat witty street lyrics, generic mixtape beats and pill popping. Some of these songs have original beats, but "D.O.A." is a freestyle over that beat and the general feel of the album is definitely mom & pop/bootleg quality. You can hear Superb's vocals clipping and hitting the red a lot, but this tape is really raw and when Superb really gets in his Supreme Clientele mode, Superb Clientele for brief moments lives up to its title. But tracks like "I Am So Ill" kill that mood pretty quickly, and for Supreme's supposed ghostwriter this stuff sure is pretty middle of the road. Not that anyone was watching for this anyway, but you're better off with one of the Slaughterhouse members' solo albums than this. Unless, of course, uptown New York rap is forever your shit. Superb Clientele is raw as hell at times, especially on tracks like "Meetin' With Death", "When It Rains It Pours" and "Letter to Chip Banks", but unfortunately it's just not a very rewarding listen from front to back. This release is really for two people: Wu-Tang completists that need to hear Superb's take on his relationship with Ghostface Killah, and lovers of pure, gritty New York street rap. How many of those people still exist is anyone's guess. |
