Sicuramente meno "ruspante" e diretto dei primi due.Contiene ottime canzoni rock
ma anche momenti piu' anonimi.Non sono e non lo saranno piu' gli X dei primi due album. |

I realize this opinion might get me stoned, but I hearby declare X overrated. I know, I know (ducking projectiles) the group is praised up and down, particularly the early stuff. But much as I want to love X, I more admire the group, like the idea of it. My problem, I suppose, is that there's just not enough melody to go around. There's nothing wrong with the playing or the exuberant commitment. I just, I don't know, want better songs to wrap my arms around. That said, "Under the Big Black Sun" is quite good in spots, and the lyrics are often very strong. But the album, and the group, still fall under the label: Want to love them, can't quite do it. |

They started strong with the mighty Los Angeles, but this just might be X’s peak. Exene, John, Billy and DJ keep the energy high on Under the Big Black Sun, sounding tighter than ever and equipped with an awesome bunch of songs.
Really, there’s not a weak track on here. “Real Child of Hell” is the only one that doesn’t impress me, but it’s not bad – just average. “The Hungry Wolf” with its driving drumbeat is a great album opener, followed up by another favourite of mine, the bouncy “Motel Room in my Bed”. The 50s-ish “Come Back to Me”, with Billy Zoom on saxophone, is a departure from X’s classic punk-rockabilly sound, and it works wonderfully. As well as this, they cover a Tin Pan Alley song (“Dancing with Tears in my Eyes”), rip through the brilliant title track, and close with the blue collar anthem “The Have Nots”.
The reissue sounds fantastic, with worthy bonus tracks: a great cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' “Breathless”, as well as a few other alternate mixes/live versions.
In my opinion, this is the sound of a band at the top of their game. An essential album. |

Excellent LP. Went to their concert, local university, when this came out - excellent to see in person (back in the day). You cannot go wrong with this LP - every song a '5'. |

This album really rocks a lot. X drew from punk rock at the time but also the roots of rock itself, like 50s rock and rollers. They don't sound anything like the Cramps though - they go for meaty power chords and drum rolls and hollering, rather than twanging menace and evil crooning. The twin male/female harmonies gel beautifully together. At first I was like "another LA punk band, whatever, that's only half my CD collection already" but this is something you should look into if you feel you're kind of sick of American punk.
Like all the Rhino X reissues, this adds some bonus tracks, some of which are live recordings of bad tape quality but great spirit. There’s also a power-pop type version of that song 'Breathless' which will leave you, eheeem, BREATHLESS, it's that good. |

One of the best non-commercial bands of the 80s. Great songs & great raw vocals.

I've owned this for more than 20 years now. I still love it from beggining to end. It never disappointed me every time i turned to it. It's one of the albums with more songs that randomly pop into my mind and make me start singing them. I love the lyrics, the ambiance, The Have Nots, the way dawn comes soon enough for the working class and it keeps getting sooner or later. It's not fair to give less than the maximum rate. So be it. Every single song on this record is perfectly nailed. |
