Da Drought [Mixtape] [Cash Money Records 2003]

Overall: 42.5 - 45 3.65/5 71 - 75%: Impressive; well above average; TRY IT
Another reason to downgrade the Carter Files is that some of the better stuff was already on Da Drought anyway ("So Many Places", "Raw Tunes"). While fans of Da Drought 3 might be disappointed to find Wayne mostly in Carter bounce mode here, fans of Sqad Up will be more than pleased with what Wayne's delivering here. Still, it's hard to ignore his rewriting of a verse from Sqad 4 on "Drought (Interlude)" and "Pop Goes the Pussy"'s massive similarities to "Jump Jiggy". Still, this is some enjoyable stuff and especially for Wayne fans there's no reason to not try and have a copy of this. No DJ drops, just Wayne on his mixtape lyrical tip rapping over some dope in-house, non Mannie Fresh productions. Unfortunately the production is a little bland - I never totally got into Carter either - and I just prefer Wayne's headspace when he's rapping on other people's beats at this point. The potential is there, but the end product leaves a little to be desired. Still, it's amazing how undervalued this is on RYM as of this review (1.66). |
