Overall: 61 - 63.25 2.82/5 55 - 58%: Slightly above average; BE WARNED
So this is my first mixtape from Pap. I'm impressed by his lyricism, as I suppose I should be. However, by the second half the tape's beats take a major turn for the worse, sampling contemporary R&B hits and just getting this weird soft vibe. What tracks don't have this softness are mired in New York clichés, as one might expect from a Green Lantern/Kay Slay release. There's also the problem of 22 tracks all grouped together with little to no context. The first 8 tracks do a solid job of fitting the title and standing as a tribute to street life in New York, but it quickly starts struggling to find its ground on political and personal topics. The sudden softness of the beats adds to the jarring repetitiveness of Papoose's delivery and subject matter. Sean Bell will come up a few times, including the dedication "We Shall Overcome".
Overall, I'm as impressed by Pap as I assume most everyone else is. But this is not an exceptional or even good mixtape, it's just a bunch of impressive rhyming with no real goal besides leaving an impression. Which, I suppose, mission accomplished. |
