21 Gun Salute [Mixtape] [Streetsweepers 2009]

1|Intro (feat. DJ Kay Slay)|0:42 2.25 - 3
2|The Wire|3:14 (Produced by GQ Beats) 4
3|Hat Under My Hood|3:18 (Produced by DJ Rob-E-Rob) 3 - 3.25
Starts out really shady and offensive, but eventually picks up.
4|Let's Get It (feat. Young Chris)|1:47 3 - 3.5
5|Run Down on 'Em|2:58 (Produced by DJ Green Lantern) 3
6|Knowledge Is Freedom (feat. AZ)|3:26 (Produced by Absolute) 4
7|Brooklyn|3:03 3 - 3.5
8|Bitchassness|4:03 3.75 - 4
9|Six Million Ways to Die (feat. Bun B & Chamillionaire)|4:12 (Produced by DJ Kay Slay & Stay Gettin') 2.75 - 3
10|All That|3:48 (Produced by E-Dubb) 2 - 2.5
11|If You Saw Me in a Line Up|4:05 1 - 1.5
12|Take These Bars|3:16 2 - 2.75
13|We Shall Overcome|3:48 3 - 3.25
I feel weird being unable to name this sample since I've listened to it dozens of times. But that's how I roll.
14|Get the Money|2:34 (Produced by DJ Nu) 2 - 2.5
15|Baby Love|4:00 1
16|Street Code|3:41 (Produced by Ty Sticks) 3 - 3.25
Beat is similar to a couple things.
17|Dirty York Shit|4:08 (Produced by Ty Sticks) 3 - 3.25
18|Graffitti|3:17 3 - 3.75
19|Live & Learn|3:28 3 - 3.5
20|Break Um Up (feat. Thug-A-Cation)|3:26 (Produced by GQ Beats) 2.25 - 3
21|I Can Help You Get Off|2:15 (Produced by DJ Green Lantern) 2 - 2.5
Sounds a lot like Jay-Z right here.
22|Kay Slay Outro (feat. DJ Kay Slay)|0:21 2.25 - 3

Overall: 61 - 63.25 2.82/5 55 - 58%: Slightly above average; BE WARNED

So this is my first mixtape from Pap. I'm impressed by his lyricism, as I suppose I should be. However, by the second half the tape's beats take a major turn for the worse, sampling contemporary R&B hits and just getting this weird soft vibe. What tracks don't have this softness are mired in New York clichés, as one might expect from a Green Lantern/Kay Slay release. There's also the problem of 22 tracks all grouped together with little to no context. The first 8 tracks do a solid job of fitting the title and standing as a tribute to street life in New York, but it quickly starts struggling to find its ground on political and personal topics. The sudden softness of the beats adds to the jarring repetitiveness of Papoose's delivery and subject matter. Sean Bell will come up a few times, including the dedication "We Shall Overcome".

Overall, I'm as impressed by Pap as I assume most everyone else is. But this is not an exceptional or even good mixtape, it's just a bunch of impressive rhyming with no real goal besides leaving an impression. Which, I suppose, mission accomplished.
