Listening to Some comfortable little thing my iPod shuffle slipped on me
favorite artists
Since coming on RYM I have found more music to listen to than I would have ever done any other way. My tastes have changed over the years - from the rock of Led Zeppelin in the early 70's; punk in the late 70's; post-punk in the early 80's. Now I listen to all sorts - ranging from old favourites to metal, emo, alternative, classical, folk, post-rock and black metal. At any one time my iPod shuffle will have on rotation say, the Rolling Stones, Bedrich Smetana, the Chameleons, Marvin Gaye, the Ataris and Son House.

It is easier to describe what I don't like than go on about what I do. Forget disco for a start. Rap I struggle with and rarely find something I like. Above all I detest the mainstream pap which is put out, be it prancing talentless boy bands, arse-wiggling talentless girl bands or the latest wailing RnB diva.
other comments
Sadly, popular music is going (has gone) downhill. It's the pop svengalis of this world we got to blame. We could always spot the frauds in the past - the Rollers, Kenny, Milli Vanilli. But now there is just so much junk out there it is sad. Kids only get to hear the mass-produced pulp churned out with the sole aim of depriving them of their pocket money. Why we have to endure the Pussycat Dolls, let alone the horrendous Britney is beyond me. People complain about advertising for sweets, junk food, cigarettes etc. aimed at kids and yet they ignore the effect promoting this garbage has on innocent young minds.

In years to come, when the human race has reverted to living in mud huts and burning firewood to keep warm, the collapse of our oil-based civilisation will be traced back to churning out endless copies of Westlife, Blue, Kylie, S-Club garbage etc, thereby using up our non-renewable oil in a product which contributes nothing the advancement of humanity. And we think we're sooooo damn smart!

Anyway, for what it's worth, here are the criteria I use to rate music. It is worth pointing out that I only review stuff I have heard:

5 stars: Life changing. Everyone should have this. Without this your music collection and your life is incomplete. This is reserved for either the most emotionally stimulating stuff, or for music which holds a special place in my life due to time and circumstance.
4.5 stars: Almost perfect. This is the stuff which is so good it borders on the brilliance. It does not get the full ***** because there is just that slight hint that there is something lacking. It is indefinable, but nonetheless present.
4 stars: Excellent. This is something which is so good it gets regular play on the turntable or the CD player. However, it is always likely to drop down to 3.5 stars as other stuff comes along to replace it.
3.5 stars: Good. This is something you come back to when the mood hits you, or which once had regular time on your turntable or CD player but has now been replaced by more recent purchases.
3 stars: OK. This is good stuff which never seems to get the time it ought to. You can listen to this when the moment hits you and enjoy it.

Below this, things get progressively poorer.

2.5 stars: Disappointing. May contain an essential track, but generally is below par and has too much filler.
2 stars: Unacceptable. Something I bought on a recommendation only and found it severely wanting. My fault for not checking stuff out before forking out my hard earned cash on it.
1.5 stars: Poor. Maybe has a single track worth listening to. Frequently given to usually good bands who put out a shocker.
1 star: Embarrasing. This is the lowest rating I will give to music in my collection. This is the embarrassing stuff that I own.
0.5 stars: Unlistenable. This is the stuff which makes me want to turn it off. This is contrary to the Geneva Convention on Human Rights.

BTW. For anyone who wishes to vote on label profiles, as I sometimes do, here is the link: http://rateyourmusic.com/labels/profile_history

Rocket to Russia
Rated: 4.00 stars

I played Rocket to Russia to some friends of mine recently, friends who had heard little by the band and were definitely not punks in 1978. Not surprisingly, the comments I received concerned how simple it was, how it all sounded the same, how unoriginal and largely how as an album this was basically not very good. It took a bit of explaining as to why this was such a great album. I’m not sure if those friends would agree with me, but they would probably have a better understanding of why I regar...

Respect!

Those of you out there whose views I respect. I may not agree with anything you say, but you have thought through your position, you have come to a view, and hold it firmly and honestly without hypocrisy and with conviction. As I said, in some cases I do not agree with a single thing you say, but that does not stop me from respecting you.

What I woke up to

One of the ways of coping with stress or depression is to seek to avoid and marginalise the most obvious symptoms. That moment between sleep and awake is a difficult one as there is little ability to control one's thoughts, and if one is not careful, all the wrong thoughts flood in and destabilise your morning and your day. It is possible to control that to extent. I force music to be the first thing I hear in my head when I wake up. What I cannot control is what that music is. Sometimes it is something I have been listening to a lot. Sometimes it is an old favourite. Sometimes it is something I haven't heard in a long while. Oddly, sometimes it is something I don't like at all. Here is a list of a month of morning wake up sounds rattling round the inside of my head.

Cherryeater's Fascinating Archaeological Sites of the Week

From the series of threads on the OT Board and by popular demand (well Grundle and Tezcat), here is the list of threads.

A work in progress. The sole criterion for inclusion is that I have personally visited the site. I try to choose the lesser known sites as I guess most people will know the famous ones already. All photographs were taken by me.
