As you may have read, I lead a stupid internet project called The Meme Friends. We make music on Saturdays and each one is built of user submitted songs and we make an album with them.

Unlike a lot of people who have done this, we try to take our project more seriously. Meaning that we run quality control, make a genre to follow and etc.

Today marks the 13th Release from us. So here's my list of favorite to least favorite.

15.The Meme Friends - Now That's What I Call GENERIC!

This album is probably the only that ever doesn't follow the Quality over Comedy rule. It has some amazing tracks on it don't get me wrong. But some tracks, most note-ably "The Meme Friends Fucking Suck (Airhorn Solo!)", forget about the quality and just are jokes, and not very good ones.

Other songs can just be boring. But while I'm saying all this I will say, not all tracks are bad. There are a few good ones. But some are boring, some are bad and some are just filler it seems.

This album is overall concept wise and while not all tracks are bad, partially track wise, what The Meme Friends weren't trying to do.

It's still okay though in the end. But I'd rank it the worst.

14.The Meme Friends - Enter the Meme Friends: 90 Chambers

The Hip-Hop album. This was probably one of the most hyped and most disappointing albums released. I'm literally gonna just say it here, this album was very un-noteworthy. Usually after an album is finished there's some sorta "Wow, that was awesome!". But this one was just kinda unsatisfying and was forgettable. But if you wanna check it out go ahead.

13.The Meme Friends - San Pellegrino, Bedside Manner EP

The Piano EP. This is the shortest album of all. It features a variety of tracks ranging from downbeat to fast-pace tracks. It is probably one of the most forgotten releases of them all sadly, it's not the best, but it's not bad. It's a decent listen.

12.The Meme Friends - Q: Are We Not Memes

The Summer-Core album. It came right after the debut, and while not bad it didn't receive explosive response. The major downfalls of this album are one track not being Summer-Core at all and one, without trying to be mean... being pretty damn bad. There's also probably the most controversial release on this "Diarrhea is Fun" which meets half of a response saying "It's amazing!" and half saying "This is really bad". I tend to side with the first group more in thinking that it was a great track. But that's just me. If it weren't for the two tracks very much out of place on this album, it might be in the upper half, but the two tracks hold the album back a lot.

11.The Meme Friends - Meme Disco is Now a Genre and You Can't Do Anything About It

The third album in the series. Probably the easiest to get into release as well. It's the most straight forward with its simple dance/disco influences. It is decently bright and upbeat through out with a few exceptions but everything still works together for the most part.

10.The Meme Friends - The Meme Friends

Hey look! The debut! This is without a doubt the most well known release which has received thousands of plays on Soundcloud and it definitely is what sparked The Meme Friends direction for /mu/ makes an album threads. It was an album that relied much more heavily on quality music than jokes. It had a few laughs but nothing too distracting. It also has Big Guy which is the most well received and all around favorite The Meme Friends track.

So why is it so low? Because it had been out-performed. I'm not saying the original album is bad. But the group took what made it good and amplified it a ton. It is definitely worth listening but once you reach the later stages of the discography it becomes clear that the album isn't the best there is to offer in the releases. A lot of people have only heard this album though.

An album that does everything this album did but better would be notably "I Still Think of Archie Every Christmas", which did the no-genre style in a more well done way.

But even with all this... is it worth a listen? Yes. It's just not the best.

9.The Meme Friends - Who Killed Archie Andrews

The Retro album. This one is filled with guitar riffs, bright synths, retro stabs and fast paced drumming. But it also has some mellow moments and is another one of the albums that was very balanced and worked well.

8.The Meme Friends - My Time Has Come to Become Immortal

The Chiptune album. The follow up the much loved 80's album. This album is one that definitely is worth mentioning. It was another album with a great sense of humor without distracting from the quality. It is definitely worth a listen.

7.The Meme Friends - Last Week's Pizza EP

The Meme Friends did a surprise EP thread for a Lo-Fi album, it ended up being a great way to follow up the previous effort "Reason 333", being that it was the exact opposite. Instead of drone-y synthetic sounds, it was plucky analog sounds. Not all tracks are perfect but it is very much worth paying a visit.

6.The Meme Friends - Dark Ocean Succubus

This album is Ocean Grunge with a slight touch of Dream Pop. It's one of the group's more solid efforts and is also probably one of the darkest albums put out. It is like an odd combination of the debut and the Vaporwave meets Shoegaze album.

5.The Meme Friends -  中国の象形文字とくだらない90の広告 (Chinese Hieroglyphics and Shitty 90's Advertisements)

Most people when you ask for their favorites wouldn't mention this, but I can't not. This is probably the most under-rated release in my honest opinion. Not every track is perfect, but this is one of the most moody and album like releases put out. This album is Vaporwave meets Shoegaze, odd combination? Yes. Good combination? Also yes.
This album needs to be given multiple listens, especially with some of the more disjointed tracks and more drone-y tracks. The opener perfectly sets this album up and from there it goes all sorts of places.

4.The Meme Friends - I Still Think of Archie Every Christmas

The second attempt at doing an album with NO genre. The first going to the self-titled. This one going a lot more smoothly than the debut.

This out of all the albums probably has the best balance of humor and quality. It never ditches its quality for the humor it goes for though.

It has some seriously amazing tracks and is enjoyable from beginning to end.

3.The Meme Friends - Costa Rican Jungle Wifi

The Jungle album is the only Meme Friends album that was designed to be above 10 tracks. And it's a good listen that's for sure, it's also the only album to have the entire core Meme Friends members all on it (all who were in the group when it was made).

It's fun, consistent and well made all around.

2.The Meme Friends - Reason 333

This is our ambient album, and it's not perfect. But it has a lot of moments that really shine on it. It really works as an album, not only that it transitions smoothly from track to track (this wasn't planned), but it is really structured like an album and there's no track that's bad.

In general this was a kick ass release, and if you're interested in checking out our stuff. Start here as not only is it good, but it's pretty easy to get into.

1.The Meme Friends - Archie Undeath

Part 4 of the Archie series. This album is a 12 track long Post-Rock, Dark Ambient and Dark Acoustic onslaught. It takes place after Archie's death when he rises to the grave.

This is by far the most cohesive album there is, it's diverse enough to be a refreshing listen though. It's extraordinarily moody and atmospheric too. If you want the best album out of them all, look no further.

Tracks like "Falling / What Happened?" really show off the story telling aspect as the track progresses from a nightmarish sequence of guitar strings and samples from the Archie Cartoon, to a lighter dreamy section with guitar, vocoder, flutes and light percussion.

The album received tons of positive attention and even got posted on Anthony Fantano's tumblr blog.

This is a must listen for anyone interested in crowd-sourced music.
