Bubblegum Bass, if you'd like, and still probably my favourite music
WHAT IS IT?

First and foremost, PC Music is a netlabel founded in 2013, that could also be called a collective. Their site (which is more obtuse than the old one, I like it less) can be found here, and lists most of the artists on the label; although, a key thing is that associates like SOPHIE & Felicita are essential in considering PC Music as a thing.

On RYM, it's also a genre, Bubblegum Bass, named after many iterations of the list. I dropped it from the title because it's unnecessary, but still support naming the genre something. The description of the music itself on that genre's page has it covered, but the defining quality to the sound, to me, is high tech sound design, though the pop melodies can take priority sometimes.

As of 2014, they are expanding their brand.

Bipp / Elle

SOPHIE

Bipp / Elle (2013) [Single]

Bipp is still essentially a turning point with this As a Genre, cause it's the first tune with a sense of scale way beyond this world and also to get some attention from media publications. It's still probably my favourite song, the most amazing sound design, vocal performance, very much sounds like the cover art

Elle completely falls outside the PC Canon, if a nice showcase of SOPHIE's sound design. I suspect he wouldn't have made this the B-side had PC already existed with this single's release

Pink and Blue

Hannah Diamond

Pink and Blue (2013) [Single]

As PC Music as a form of Pop Music goes, this is still almost untoppable - next level vocal quirks in the verses, probably the only Artichoke Ace bridge that's not only notable but excellent, the best for emotional impact, and not hung up on energy drinks. This sold me on the genre and still hits every few months

Beautiful (2014) [Single]

Gets glossed over because a) it's a huge grower and b) you can't quite write as much about what it means as QT or whatever, but this is seriously euphoric, the sound of everything being at peace under the pink sun :(

Lemonade / Hard

SOPHIE

Lemonade / Hard (2014) [Single]

Lemonade: Summery and incidental and annoying all in good ways, but I still wish the happy bits were expanding upon and lasted longer. Still, how it is, we get nice and positively explosive transitions

Hard: Abstract and sharp, slowly beating down a glass wall which lets light glisten beautifully under the light, or something. GFOTY's distorted vocals are a nice touch, but those bells and ending! Makes Lemonade look pointless

Like You (2013) [Single]

A lot of PC-inspired stuff has the Cute Pop down, but rarely the Dance, and here the ratios are completely flipped - cuteness injected into a 2-step/bass track to complement it rather than vice versa, and it works so much; one you'd actually play in a DJ set, albeit near the start

Hey QT (2014) [Single]

This is played out a lot (like, a lot) because there's an energy drink and XL Recordings and the internet needed something to write about in September 2014, but regardless, I loved this when lying in bed liking people I'd never meet and it scratches the same itch as everything else and it's produced by Sophie

Shame about that "hey" in the second verse though

Glittery and glitchy test tube that could potentially be the best or worst introduction to PC Music - one of those that feels like browsing a MySpace page while a thousand CGI Hannah Diamond gifs sing at you, and yet there's not a misplaced sample or digitally mechanical sound

THIS REFERS TO HEAVEN (A. G. COOK REMIX) WHICH THE OVERLOADS MERGED INTO THIS FOR SOME REASON

The mysterious English women A. G. Cook works with on his remixes are always amazing, but here the robotic male samples steal the show; combining them with the footwork beats just makes the track glisten into a feeling worthy of its title, yet still feeling like a silly web page

Attachment (2014) [Single]

Unlike Pink and Blue, not an upbeat tune, but a slow music-box Kate Bush-album-track-2074 ballad. It truly is all about the subtleties here: the somehow skillful offbeatness of the chorus, the tension built by Night Slugs instrumentation, that percussive sound, etc. Nice cover art too

In My Dreams

Danny L Harle

In My Dreams (2014) [Single]

Note that this is a cute little sequel to Danny's previous PC Music single, Broken Flowers; Broken Flowers is just as good, if not better, but has none of the sound so I've put it far down below

Very few PC Music singles use actual dissonance as much as its reputation would suggest, and this really is the first one - even down to the images of the birds. Danny knows what he's doing. True cryjam!

Another huge grower! B\/bbleg\/m BΛss bathed in Spring Breakers colours and the appropriate club sounds, and as always the verses are delivered with just the right level of awkwardness ("we drove to Miami cause Miami is a place" is my favourite not-actually-lyric of 2014. This is 2013 tho)

My lipgloss twin boundaryfuss wrote a far better review for this (and the state of PC criticism) than I ever could; it's also very long though, so in summary; Felicita builds melodies around speech rhythms, almost "off the grid," and it's social & cathartic. Cool site visuals, too.

Snow Other (2014) [Single]

First instrumental PC jam for the list! Feelings of a lazy Sunday at PC HQ, starting with 5 bowls of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs and ending with jumping on the bed. The samples and the candy bass are the paint on the wall. Actually I'll take the time here to say that the weather was really nice when I stumbled across PC Music and this reminds me of that, it just makes me feel really good, but I don't know about you

Every Night (2014) [Single]

Now you can pay for these on iTunes!! Which feels like a big deal 'cause even though SOPHIE and QT were similar releases it's actually on PC Music's proper label so RIP PC Music if you thought they were making a statement or whatever

Anyway, the song is pretty good, if disappointingly in a different vein to her other songs! It's basically the exact same song as "Bronze" below and close to Hey QT but feels much more complete and clubby than either of those. Beautiful cover art too, probably Diamond Wright's finest

Not That Bad (2014) [Single]

Not as intense as a Maxo / GFOTY collab could, potentially, be, but as a trade its pleasantness is one of its greatest values. That hook is an actual real pop hook, down to its sweet sentiment, even through its Nintendo fetishism

Bobby (2013) [Single]

PC Music's first single, and perhaps not uncoincidentally GFOTY sounds most like an actual sincere, real person here; this is Sad White Girl Rap to the finest detail, potential fictitious in-jokes and all, yet as staged as its site (look at that), as if any of the crew decided to work with Kitty and play it straight. I can get down with that. Also the club mix is nice

Wannabe (2014) [Single]

As amusing as having Stereogum write about a track as off the wall as this is, I think it's useless to take this as a piece of deconstruction art or some lame horseshit. This is PC Music taken to its most extreme, a track breaking itself down and outdoing itself every glossy second in a way only surpassed by "Doves."

Or, you could take it as Art or whatever, in which case eww, but it's delivered with a smile and not ""post-internet "deconstructionism""" so who gives a shit

Save Me (2014) [Single]

A remix of "Bring Me to Life" made by "a talented dog," and the fact that this is everything I want from my teen angst negates any novelty factor this may carry for me. Not to look down upon the original song at all, but this format is good for it - really brings out the Aqua-ishness of those original backing vocals

Ur Not a Baller (2014) [Single]

Sounds like you'd expect a Warlord-produced song called "Ur Not a Baller" for two white people (who are in actuality good designers and people associated with the scene) to sound, which is to say it has a nice hook, but usually notable for its "controversial" (because "chavs") video in most circles. Actually very 2008 now that I think of it

I'm talking about SOPHIE's set here; QT's is just "Hey QT" with an extended intro. Good song though! Also sorry for putting Sophie at the top of both main sections

Some of the most fun music from the scene; the 4 new songs are all potential singles (especially the first,) the old songs are all classics and that "Friday Night" edit is very interesting indeed. Though as a pre-prepared set (the DJ you see in the video isn't even him - he's most likely to be the security guy you see periodically) it's apparently much less intense than his real sets!

Secret Mix (2014) [DJ Mix]

really more of a selection of songs with no regard for actual mixing, it doesn't matter

GFOTY (the post-"Bobby" version, good as that song is) is honestly my favourite person amongst this whole bunch, her songs sounding like diary entries written in all capitals and heading off on weird tangents, and this is her manifesto. These are the best songs. The covers are sincere. I don't wanna drink another soda with another mother

Again more of a selection of songs than an actual mix, but even though there's only 3-4 actual Cook originals, this still feels a great actual introduction to PC Music as a whole. Even the skits, which otherwise would be tacky (even in Cook's hands on other mixtapes) serve to add a certain dreamy quality to it all, coexisting with the bangerzz

Six of PC's characters present 10 minutes of mostly original content each, with the loose theme of Red Bull. The second one of these!! Danny L Harle AND Sophie!!! As expected there's a lot of excellent pop tunes hidden away in that second half featuring them working together, providing a good run of Actual Pop Tunes. Danny's presence is more felt than SOPHIE's, or at least not the SOPHIE that's weird and scary. Finn's is even better than before but I can take or leave the Soda Plains set

Danny's presence is more felt than SOPHIE's, or at least not the SOPHIE that's weird and scary. Finn's is even better than before but I can take or leave the Soda Plains set

LuckyMe x Rinse 32 (2014) [Bootleg / Unauthorized]

A. G. Cook starts at around 34:16; his tracklist is here

Another example of Cook not actually being too great at compiling a set, but regardless the tunes here are strange and good. Slightly easyFun-flavoured if that helps. His remixes of Drake and Ghetts are two of my favs from him. A. G. Cook is my boyfriend

Limp Bizkit (Maxo's Biquick mix) (2014) [DJ Mix]

Another one to add to the "bubblegum nu metal" canon! (the other one is Save Me that's the joke)

Limp Bizkit remixes by Maxo as the first in a promised series of mixes by LOGO Magazine where artists pay tribute to their influences - I can't tell whether appreciation of this is just the logical conclusion of the worst poptimism but it's pretty enjoyable

RADIO JACK댄스 「두」 (2014) [DJ Mix]

JACK댄스 (actually a qt named Simon who runs a club night with the Jack name) generally have good mixtapes showing off the latest tunes in the sort of PC Music scene; though this is more a radio show I include this one cuz it's the latest as I'm listening and, amongst other good tunes, there's rare A. G. Cook T-Pain in there

EDIT: The A. G. Cook T-Pain song is gone :(

https://soundcloud.com/jackdansu/radio-jack-november-2014 (check the soundcloud for more; the Radio Tank Mix is probably the best)

CC Mix (2013) [DJ Mix]

Very sugary stuff; kicking off with a nice Ke$ha album track edit (the original track is great too; because all of this is so insincere right) which feels very warm and sweet, and there's also a rare Hannah Diamond track and good remix from Life Sim. A pleasant listen, above anything else

Dog Food Mix 1

GFOTY & Spinee

Dog Food Mix 1 (2015) [DJ Mix]

A mix to promote a Boiler Room show/stream, featuring Spinee (the talented dog) remixes of GFOTY tunes; they're actually a lot more essential and less phoned-in as on paper, but the dialogue really makes it shine, resembling some Tim and Eric kids' show starring the two. They have enough control over their Presented Personalities that it's good

64 Thousand Dollar Bombs (2014) [DJ Mix]

Not too much Bubblegum as far as Bummlegun Bass goes (though it's definitely there), this is more UK bass that happens to be very pink. Spinee's productions are pretty nice and I'm liking the dog aesthetic! Missing a "Save Me" though (that Timbaland edit doesn't count)

Most PC EPs generally exchange Good Songs for interesting sound design and beats, but this is different, pretty much; each song has a very convincing pop structure. "Laplander" is a wonderful marriage of the '13 and the '15 PC Music aesthetics

The first of few PC Music full, non-single releases, and another instrumental one. The beats here are actually fairly straightforward Wonky ones, and it's interesting to hear how much atmosphere (Ferraro being an obvious comparison) a little bit of Bulgeulgum gives it. Satisfying

BaeBae (2014) [EP]

The EP most like a selection of actual B.B. singles. Very A. G. Cook, and I could see Guy working directly with PC Music at some point, based on the strengths of this EP. The title track stands out - those vocal samples make it all very good for the heart - and the shots at the PC look on Footwork and House in the rest of the EP are appreciated

Felicita

Frenemies (2014) [EP]

Houses "Doves" and "Climb Up Eh" - personally I prefer my Felicita in the deranged style of those tracks, which only "Mmmhmm" from the EP delivers on otherwise, but I feel this forms an abstract narrative in a very actual ~~art music~~ way. It's not for everyone, possibly not even me, but that's the charm.

Broken Flowers

Danny L Harle

Broken Flowers (2013) [Single]

The most "sophisticated" PC single, and in my experience the one people not into PC Music are most likely to like. Lovely rhyme scheme + structure, and the general Euro callback feel is very nice indeed.

Western Beats (2014) [EP]

Geocities house music; there is a great 15-minute mix of this album up on the PC Soundcloud that acts as a very good litmus test wrt the whole thing. The album itself is big and jarring (it sounds nothing like PC Music!), but quite a bit enjoyable when taken as parts.

"Good Price" is my fav!

Christmas 2.0 (2013)

Probably because only a few songs are actually by PC Music artists, this is far, far from their most immediate thing - but the visual / online aspect of the album is really exciting. They work with Priz Tats for this and the sites are very expansive, probably, lowkey, their most technically impressive project before 2014's 'Sup' site.

For my money, though, like a solid half of the album grew on me, with special mention going to Joseph Marinetti's "Fever."

Sup (2014) [EP]

Not in the EP section because, though it's good in terms of garden-variety PC, the site overshadows it and is clearly a much larger endeavour. It feels endless, almost ARG-ish, and is fascinating to explore in complete silence from a net nostalgia desktop-whirring perspective, and from a musical one it's pretty interesting to see how they choose to visualise the samples in the Lil Data music

PC Music: Dead or Alive (2014) [Bootleg / Unauthorized]

A sp00ky Halloween stream featuring good sets (when A. G. plays "Hard" and a<3), but most ambitious in its sp00ky visuals. Highlights are Danny L Harle's Summer Set, where a terrifying skeleton helps reveal Harle's Tim and Eric influence, and Thy Slaughter inexplicably turning into a thrash band.

Pop It (2014) [Single]

Obvious PC Music influence (down to it's DIS-esque site) gone mainstream (in that people might know who Anamanaguchi is and it was used in a Target ad apparently), and pulls it off well. True #cryjam

The video is really gross though and an appropriation of all PC Music things I'm not so keen on

Mostly, this is literally monotonously remixed pop music that fits into some of the questionable criticism of PC Music like a glove, but a good tune emerges from this occasionally; stuff attributed to JΛSMINE is generally pretty nice and Lil Angel Boi and Ponibbi aren't usually tasteless in their picks for their Nightcores

What Cook & The Gang were doing before PC Music kicked off! Very hit and miss, naturally - they had a couple of rock bands and an actual Cloud Rap mixtape, though I do like the latter - but the hits pretty good regardless. Friday Night is my fav of these (partially because of the SOPHIE rework in his Boiler Room set won't lie) and Nightspeeder and Link Ting (Other Girls) are some pretty good proto-Bubblegum Bass (everything after Secret Mix is actually post-Bubblegum Bass, you imbecile, you fucking moron)

  • DJ Warlord's Twitter (mostly Pitbull retweets - rivals GFOTY's Facebook in terms of entertaining social media profiles IMO)

  • PC Music's 6-page Dazed spread (rad Nicki art too - have this issue!)
  • The PC Music tumblr, featuring more xxclusive artwork in their archives than their other sites
  • Also if you want to integrate PC Music fully into your life, as I have, and make each release a drop-everything-holy-shit affair and also have a mobile device, follow them on Twitter and turn on notifications (little tip)
