First and foremost, PC Music is a netlabel founded in 2013, that could also be called a collective. Their site (which is more obtuse than the old one, I like it less) can be found here, and lists most of the artists on the label; although, a key thing is that associates like SOPHIE & Felicita are essential in considering PC Music as a thing.
On RYM, it's also a genre, Bubblegum Bass, named after many iterations of the list. I dropped it from the title because it's unnecessary, but still support naming the genre something. The description of the music itself on that genre's page has it covered, but the defining quality to the sound, to me, is high tech sound design, though the pop melodies can take priority sometimes.

It's still probably my favourite song, the most amazing sound design, vocal performance, very much sounds like the cover art

Lemonade: Summery and incidental and annoying all in good ways, but I still wish the happy bits were expanding upon and lasted longer. Still, how it is, we get nice and positively explosive transitions

Unlike Pink and Blue, not an upbeat tune, but a slow music-box Kate Bush-album-track-2074 ballad. It truly is all about the subtleties here: the somehow skillful offbeatness of the chorus, the tension built by Night Slugs instrumentation, that percussive sound, etc. Nice cover art too

My lipgloss twin boundaryfuss wrote a far better review for this (and the state of PC criticism) than I ever could; it's also very long though, so in summary; Felicita builds melodies around speech rhythms, almost "off the grid," and it's social & cathartic. Cool site visuals, too.

i like to make fun of people who read too much into the concepts in pc music - or rather whose fixation on said concepts literally overtakes their opinion on the actual music - because in doing that they make some of the most joyful, freeing, sincere music in the world seem so joyless and sterile. bubblegum bass, to me, is a LOVE LETTER to the most unfashionable music in the world, incl eurotrance, bubblegum dance, chart pop, new jack swing, k-pop/j-pop, etc. and if you scoffed at these genres before getting on the pc bandwagon, or worse, enjoy pc music as fucking satire (especially if you interpret it as a satire on "consumerism" - yeah, there are definitely genuine anti-capitalist themes that can be read into this music - though i see it more as a smirking celebration of the beautiful absurdity of late capitalism - and that's absolutely dandy, but as soon as you try to make it another shitty statement about the Vapidity Of The Sheeple, or a fucking "troll on the music industry" or whatever, you literally ignore all of the artistry that went into developing this aesthetic, and also, you're wrong and fucking gross), you're probably missing the point and i don't trust you. if you consider this forward thinking for the same reasons that you ignore dance-pop (except this is done """self-consciously""", as if that makes a fucking difference when you're listening to it), this isn't the music for you. even at its most genuinely conceptual and abstract, this music emanates nothing but love for its source material - and what it DOES, on a purely musical basis, with that material - i.e. the Actual Concepts that people are missing - is so important and liberating - but as is the case with sooo much music criticism, it gets so watered down with gross neoliberal interpretations and dumb buzzwords that trying to analyze it just stops being fun, or interesting, or worth doing. that's why these days i tend to just be like "this fucking rules" or whatever and be done with it. so much less emotionally taxing
anyway, i digress - "doves" seems to be, like, really unpopular, even among the bubblebum cognoscenti and i'm so baffled by that - i guess other people mostly hear just an annoying mess with random dumb sounds, but honestly i'm pretty set on calling this my absolute favourite song in the entire circle. this is honestly some of the most magnificently liberating pop music i've ever heard in my entire life, and it IS pop music. even though there's no actual consistent beat here (if you put this into serato to be analyzed you get a blank in the BPM counter), there's no sung melodies (the instrumental's melody is just one very simple childlike melody that gets contorted a hundred different ways), the overarching structure is pretty atypical and none of the sounds here are really typical of dance-pop or even of bubblegum bass, this is unmistakeably dance-pop - even look at the genre votes here, there's not really an argument that this is clearly bubblegum bass, even by the people who think this is a mess. and to me that's the core of what makes this song so amazing - the pure spirit of dance music, at its most utterly joyful, friendly and exploratory is contained in this song, unmistakeably, despite containing very little of what actually makes dance music as we have categorized it.
"exploratory" in this case means quite a few things, but especially exploration of the human motor system - again, this isn't a mess at all, it's a pop song - there's a legitimate RHYME SCEHEME here and its hooks and rhythms, despite their irregularities, are so real they wound me;
"DON'T TELL ME I CAn'T! i'll take this tRIP TRIP TRIP TRIP
ＬＯＯＫ ＡＴ ＴＨＥ ＲＡＩＮ - it sounds like tHIS? dRIP DRIP DRIP DRIP"
there's not really any rhythmic consistency at all (as you can see by my attempt to transcribe it), only attempts and hints and teases at such and that actually makes it feel all the more natural, conversational even. and it never really lets up and it becomes so graceful and hypnotic despite never actually resting into a pattern at any point. its choreography is so dizzyingly hypnotic exactly because it's so instantaneous - it feels like how people actually act and move in ordinary non-musical settings, a very breezy snatch of ordinary streams of consciousness, which makes it, to me, some of the most accessible music in the entire world in its way. finding a way to apply these rhythms to a "pop" setting (the vocalist - one of my favourite voices ever - is literally just talking normally at points and in this context it still comes off as very very catchy) is such a ridiculously cool and important act. it's a really novel and fascinating way to bridge the gap between musical and non-musical experiences. it's such sociable music (which to me, is like, the essence and purpose of dance music) with such a living breathing ecosystem to it - the conversation between the different manifestations of the vocalist (the fucking vocal layering on "drip drip drip DRIP drip drip") and the interdependence between the vocals and the instrumental, which play off each other in such a way that they complete each others' rhythmic phrases and fill in each others' gaps. it's so endlessly fascinating and fun and legitimately catchy
basically, everything about this song makes me melt (the big sighs make me literally weak in the knees) and i want you all to appreciate it more. and don't even get me started on its website |

| What Cook & The Gang were doing before PC Music kicked off! Very hit and miss, naturally - they had a couple of rock bands and an actual Cloud Rap mixtape, though I do like the latter - but the hits pretty good regardless. Friday Night is my fav of these (partially because of the SOPHIE rework in his Boiler Room set won't lie) and Nightspeeder and Link Ting (Other Girls) are some pretty good proto-Bubblegum Bass (everything after Secret Mix is actually post-Bubblegum Bass, you imbecile, you fucking moron) | |
