Our Blueberry Nights
It's interesting to see a list about Lana Del Rey's influences on the artist page for Norah Jones. When Lana unveiled 'Video Games', she made me think of Norah Jones too. She made the kind of record Norah Jones didn't make overtly but hinted at in many of her records - of course Norah would never have made such a dramatic - and juvenile - record as 'Video Games', but that's the intriguing thing as well. Just like Lana hasn't grown up, Norah hasn't ever been even playfully juvenile on record.
In 2007, Norah made her album 'Not Too Late' and acted in 'My Blueberry Nights.' As the cover for this single shows, she built on her enigmatic image, as a sophisticated young person making 'classic' era music.
Norah's songs have always carried strong expressions of veiled regret and a partly closed off memory of things( like this song). She's been a private person. The kind of simple minded polished exhibition of her keyboard solo is actually as fascinating as ever in its opaque quality. Why did she want to subdue everything? Surely not just for commercial success, as she hasn't seemed that comfortable with it.
I suppose, like the lightweight charm of this record, her image will fade for many but she's still a musical talent who made her own world of sound. She didn't want to be a big deal yet made lots of records, collaborated with lots of people and sold millions of CDs.
She occasionally subtly changed her style, but mostly has stuck to the appeal, to her, of old time, pre-rock and roll musical virtues. Some collectors might pick up her CDs in the future and wonder what she was all about, especially if they read about her sudden fame and popularity at the star of her career.
She might end up more obscure, never on critics lists. She might be the equivalent of those 60s ballad singers who were forgotten during the rock and roll age. She might be an influence on many other artists who later on becomes listened to more because of that. I'll hang on to my Norah Jones CDs anyway.
